Privacy Policy
notadate ("we," "us," or "our") operates the notadate mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.
By using notadate, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not access the Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address -- used for account authentication, verification, and important notifications.
- Profile data -- your display name, bio, and interests that you choose to provide.
- Date of birth -- collected once at sign-up to confirm you are 18 or older. notadate is an adults-only community. We use it only to verify eligibility and never show it on your profile.
- Profile photos -- images you upload are validated through our AI moderation system to ensure authenticity and safety.
1.2 Location Data
notadate collects location information to connect you with nearby activities. We maintain a strict distinction between private and public location data:
- Exact location (private) -- your precise coordinates are stored securely and are NEVER shared publicly. Exact location is only revealed to another user when both parties mutually confirm a meetup.
- Fuzzy location (public) -- other users see only your approximate neighborhood or district (roughly a 500-meter radius). This fuzzy location is what appears on the discovery map and in activity listings.
1.3 Behavioral and Preference Data
- Compass profile -- responses to our compatibility questionnaire are used to generate a behavioral profile across six axes (energy, values, social style, planning, openness, and communication). This data powers our experience engine to help you find people you would click with.
- Activity preferences -- the types of activities you browse, create, and join.
- Usage patterns -- how you interact with the app, including features used and time spent.
1.4 Messaging Data
Messages sent through notadate are stored on our servers to enable conversations between users. Message content may be processed by our AI moderation system to detect and prevent harassment, spam, or other violations of our community guidelines.
1.5 Device and Technical Data
We automatically collect certain technical information including device type, operating system, app version, and push notification tokens (via Expo Push Notification service).
1.6 Product Analytics
We use a first-party product analytics tool (PostHog) to understand how features are used so we can improve notadate. We record pseudonymous usage events -- for example, that a proposal was created or a connection was made -- tied to a random internal account identifier, not to your name or email.
We do not send your name, email, photos, message content, or precise location to this analytics tool, and we disable IP-based location lookup. We do not use this data for advertising, and we do not sell or share it. If you have questions about our analytics practices, contact us at hello@notadate.app.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the Service.
- Connect you with relevant activities and people near you.
- Generate compatibility insights through our Compass system.
- Moderate content and enforce community guidelines.
- Send you important account notifications and, with your consent, promotional communications.
- Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents.
- Analyze usage patterns to improve the user experience.
3. AI Processing
notadate uses OpenAI GPT-4o-mini for the following purposes:
- Content moderation -- user-generated text (bios, messages, activity descriptions) may be sent to OpenAI for automated moderation to detect inappropriate content, harassment, or policy violations.
- Photo validation -- profile photos may be analyzed to verify they contain a real person and meet our community standards.
- Topic suggestions -- AI-generated conversation starters and activity suggestions to help users connect.
Data sent to OpenAI is processed in accordance with OpenAI's data usage policies. We do not use your data to train AI models. The data is sent solely for the purpose of providing the specific features described above.
4. Authentication and Sessions
notadate uses session-based authentication with cookies. Sessions expire after 30 days of inactivity, at which point you will need to sign in again. We do not use third-party tracking cookies.
5. Push Notifications
We use the Expo Push Notification service to deliver real-time notifications about new messages, interest in your activities, and other relevant updates. You can disable push notifications at any time through your device settings.
6. Third-Party Services
We share data with the following third-party service providers, strictly as needed to operate the Service:
- OpenAI -- AI processing for content moderation, photo validation, and topic suggestions (as described in Section 3).
- Neon -- serverless PostgreSQL database hosting where your account data is securely stored.
- Expo -- push notification delivery and mobile app infrastructure.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not share your data with advertisers.
7. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you the Service.
What happens when you delete your account
You can delete your account at any time from inside the app: Profile → scroll to the bottom → Delete Account. You do not need to contact us. Deletion happens immediately when you confirm, and it cannot be undone.
What we erase. Your name, email address, password, profile photo, bio, location, date of birth, interests and personality answers, your push notification tokens, and every one of your login sessions are erased. Activities you posted that nobody joined are deleted outright; activities that someone did join are stripped of their title, description, and location details. If your email address was on our waitlist, that entry is deleted too.
What remains, and why. Two things survive deletion, and we want you to know before you decide:
- Your messages stay in the other person's conversation, and are then permanently purged within 60 days. A conversation is a shared record — we cannot erase one person's half without rewriting someone else's history and destroying evidence they may need. Messages you sent remain visible to the people you were talking with, attributed to a deleted account rather than to your name. Those messages are then permanently purged within 60 days of your deletion — deleted from our database, not hidden. There is one exception, described below: if an open safety report references that conversation, the purge is held until the report is closed.
- Safety records about your account are retained. Reports and blocks that other people filed concerning you, and our moderation records, are kept so that deleting an account cannot be used to erase a harassment history. The verbatim text of any content of yours that was flagged is redacted; the record that it happened is not.
The one thing that can delay the purge: an open safety report. If someone filed a report that names the conversation your messages are in, and that report is still open — or was resolved with an enforcement action such as a warning, a suspension, or a ban — we hold those messages instead of purging them. Deleting an account must not be a way to destroy the evidence in a live safety case. The hold covers only the conversations a report actually names, never every conversation you ever had. Once the report is closed with no action taken, the normal clock resumes and the messages are purged on our next scheduled pass. Reports resolved with an enforcement action are kept for as long as we need them to stand behind that decision.
Beyond those, we may retain limited information where we are required to for legal, regulatory, or security purposes. Deleting your notadate account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription — you cancel that through your store account settings.
How long messages are kept
Messages live for as long as the connection they belong to is active. Once a connection ends — the meetup happened, or one of you deleted your account — the conversation follows a fixed clock: it is archived for both people after 7 days, both people are warned after 30 days that the messages are about to go, and the messages are permanently purged after 60 days. The same 60-day limit is what backs the promise above about deleted accounts. The safety-report hold described above is the only thing that extends it.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right to access -- you can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to correct -- you can update or correct inaccurate personal data through your profile settings or by contacting us.
- Right to delete -- you can request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
- Right to portability -- you can request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Right to opt out -- you can opt out of non-essential data processing and marketing communications at any time.

California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to request deletion, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.
European Residents (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), we process your personal data on the basis of legitimate interest (providing the Service), consent (where applicable), and contractual necessity. You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
9. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data, including encryption in transit, secure database hosting, and access controls. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Children's Privacy
notadate is an adults-only service and is not intended for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a person under 18, we will delete that information promptly and close the associated account.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
